Today in NWI

Today, we’re all celebrating the absolute impossibility that was IU winning a Big Ten championship. As an IU alum, there was no world where I imagined that my school would ever get anywhere near the championship, let alone win it. It just goes to show that you can never count out the impossible.

Otherwise, here’s your weather report through the midweek:

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.

State Senator Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso was the target of a “swatting” attack Thanksgiving weekend — the motive of which was tethered to President Trump’s crackdown on Indiana Republicans to pass redistricting plans that would benefit the GOP

  • Preventative steps were taken to make sure that the Senator was unharmed and in a safe location, but his case joins a collection of threats against State Reps and Senators who have voiced dissent against Trump’s pushes to redistrict the state. Other Indiana politicians who have been the victims of swatting and bomb threats in the wake of this proposed redistricting are state Sen. Dan Dernule, R-Highland and Sen. Rick Niemeyer, R-Lowell. State Sen. Mike Bohacek, R-Michiana Shores declared his opposition to redistricting plans after the President used a slur for intellectually disabled people: with one of the targets for that vitriolic statement being Bohacek’s own daughter. Sen. Bohacek recieved a bomb threat to his home after voiced his opposition to Trump’s sought-after redistricting plans. The State House has passed the proposition as of Friday, with a vote in the State Senate upcoming to finally decide the fate of Indiana districting.

Steel Dynamics, currently the largest steelmaker headquartered in the state, has acquired New Process Steel for an unknown sum.

  • The steelmaker is based in Fort Wayne and, with it’s purchase of the Houston-based New Process, is one of the largest steel producers and metal recyclers in the United States. Steel Dynamics competes with integrated steelmakers like Cleveland-Cliffs and U.S Steel, but operates a smaller scales.

Roughly 300 Indiana National Guard troops have made their way to Washington D.C. after Governor Braun promised their presence in the city for a four-month excursion.

  • The Hoosier troops are just the latest group to join President Trump’s efforts in the capital to combat crime by consolidating military presence in the area. Initially, a judge had issued an injunction mandating that all National Guard troops be removed from D.C.. Thursday saw the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit reversed the ruling, allowing Trump’s efforts to continue.
