The Lowdown on Recent NWI News

Today in NWI

First things first, huge shout out to some of you, the Explorers, for sending us emails to let us know your favorite spots all around NWI. We’re gonna give a special shout out to the businesses that were brought to our attention by you guys. Thanks again to Fred, Mick and Mary for reaching out to bring some spotlight to your favorite spots.

  • Jax Restaurant in Crown Point got a special shout out from an Explorer, saying “Delicious homemade food, great service and entertainment… best hidden gem in NWI”.

  • Oxbow Park, specifically the trails running along the water, in Hammond got a shout out from an Explorer. A favorite of theirs when they want to go for a nice hike or to just enjoy a walk around a quiet, scenic spot in NWI.

  • EXP Game Center got a huge endorsement from one of the Explorers recently. Full motion racing sims, high end PC’s for gaming, game tournaments with prizes, and all the fun a gamer could be looking for.

Check out these spots hand selected by Explorers just like you! If you’ve got a favorite spot in NWI that you think deserves a shout out, drop us an email at [email protected] and we’ll be sure to give them a plug in the next newsletter. Thanks to everyone who’s already sent in a hidden gem!

Anywho, here is your weather forecast for the weekend of March 5th, 2026. We’re getting into that incredibly strange period of weather in the late winter/early spring time where we bounce between great weather, inclement weather, and something entirely uncategorizable. Either way, just another reason NWI is inherently unique.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region and Indiana writ large.

Crown Point sophomore Ceasar Salas won state in wrestling a few weeks ago and, in order to chase his dreams of competing in USA Wrestling’s U.S. Open Championships, his father set up a GoFundMe to help cover the costs.

  • Wrestlers have to meet a strict set of criteria in order to qualify for the event and Salas’ IHSAA state title covers that requirement. On top of that, to earn a spot on the U.S. Open team, he’ll have to win his division. So, his family is doing everything they can to make sure he has that chance. What a heartwarming story of how communities can come together to support the next generation! Go Ceasar! If you feel like supporting Ceasar and his bid for glory, the link to his GoFundMe is right here.

Congressman Frank J. Mrvan will be hosting two town hall events next week in NWI to listen to the needs and concerns of NWI locals.

  • The town hall events will be taking place at the below locations

    • Chesterton Town Hall Community Room, 726 Broadway

      • Monday, March 9th @ 2-3pm

    • VFW Auxillary Post 717, 10400 West 93rd Ave, St. John

      • Monday, March 9th @ 5:30-6:30pm

BP has made what they are calling their “last and best contract offer” to the United Steelworkers Local 7-1 laborers who are currently on strike, holding out for workers protections and job retention at the BP Whiting Refinery.

  • BP has given laborers 10 days from issuance to accept their last offer in what has been a contentious contract dispute between the energy giant and NWI local workers. The company is offering a six-year contract to 900 of the employees represented by USW Local 7-1 at the Whiting Refinery, which includes raises of between 3.5 and 4% over the next four years and bonuses between $7,500 and $15,000. This final offer comes after over 60 meetings between the company and union reps over the past two months of dispute. USW 7-1 President Eric Schultz has said that the multitude of concerns they have about BP’s intentions is what has kept the dispute ongoing, but no statement has been released (at the time of writing) in regards to BP’s best and final offer. We will keep you all posted.

Washington Township Elementary School teacher Crystal Lembke’s fifth-grade class got a surprise this past Tuesday when Indy Ignite volleyball mascot “Pepper” and star players Camryn Hannah and Lydia Martin joined their class for a visit.

  • Lembke has been using the Ignite and volleyball as a way to teach her students addition and averages through the prism of sports. After she and her class starting posting TikToks following the team’s performance this season, the team reached out to see how they could give back to the class for their support. Students were treated to autographed player cards, jerseys and were able to ask the players questions about what its like to be professional athlete. I feel like this kind of thing is a kid’s dream: talking to a pro athlete instead of doing math. How cool!

Farmed and Forged, a producers-only market that has been serving parts of NWI since 2023, is expanding their operation in Hammond in the coming months.

  • Farmed and Forged has been circling around Porter County for a while, offering those facing food insecurity and/or utilizing SNAP vouchers an important and localized option for sourcing fresh produce. The market even offers a triple-match to SNAP, turning $20 of buying power into $60 for those who really need it. Starting in May, they’ll be taking that community-focused approach to fresh produce and localized farming to Hammond. They’re doing incredible work for the community and I implore everyone to check out their schedule, read up on their work, and show them some love if you can.

What’s In, What’s Out?

A look at what’s happening in the world of local businesses all around NWI

Bean Me Up roasts its own beans, serves a ton of different coffee drinks and sells pies and other baked goods at their location off of Calumet Ave in Munster. For any inquiries and further information, contact the owner at 219-808-1833.

  • Lincoln Kitchen in Valpo is getting an injection of Polish flair, with the opening in a few weeks of Polish Eats. This Polish Deli will be offering imported Polish fare and deli favorites out of the Lincoln Kitchen’s shared kitchen space.

  • El Pollo Cris Cris will be opening a location in Hammond’s Robertsdale neighborhood. Starting in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago in the mid 90s, they are known for their grilled chicken, tacos and burritos.

  • Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in Hammond has shuttered its doors after only a few months at their new location near Portside Pub.

  • Cotton Hearts Quilt Shop has closed down after about a year of operation in downtown Hebron. The store was meant to fill a void in the area, offering quilting classes and get-togethers to help foster the hobby and art form, but is closing due to the health of the owners.
