Lake County has established 11 early voting sites across the county ahead of the general election. Early voting begins on October 6th and since 1/3 of Lake County voters cast their ballot early or via absentee by mail, planning ahead is your best bet. NIPSCO has updated expected restoration times for the following cities and service areas. Note: these estimates are, of course, subject to change.

Funds from the State Disaster Relief Fund can be awarded to Indiana households (pending eligibility) while Hoosiers wait for federal government relief following the destructive storms from last week. Households can request up to $5,000 to make necessary and immediate repairs to restore the habitability of their residences and/or to cover the cost of damaged/destroyed furniture, clothing and other essential goods. Insured homeowners and renters should rely on their insurance coverage instead of requesting disaster relief funds, as emergency grants cannot be used to cover deductibles. NWI residents who are participants in SNAP have been granted more time to submit requests to replace food lost due to power outages following last week’s destructive storms. The deadline for eligible SNAP members to seek replacement SNAP benefits from the Indiana FSSA is now August 31st, extending the deadline an extra ten days. This will help prevent families from worrying about replacing spoiled food while waiting for their power to be restored. Residents whose homes or businesses were partially or completely destroyed in last week’s storms can ask for their property to be reassessed for property tax purposes due to current condition. LaTonya Spearman, Lake County Assessor, has been urging locals who have experienced significant storm, flood or fire damage to file a State Form 137R with their county assessor’s office to see if your property is eligible for reassessment. The form can be found on the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance website (click here) by searching for “Form 137R”.

Indiana State Board of Finance have agreed to transfer $43.8 million to 650 counties, towns and cities to replace the money these areas would have normally collected in gas taxes, coming on the heels of Gov. Mike Braun’s suspension of the state gas tax in order to curb rising prices due to the US’s war with Iran.

Lake County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted in agreement to declare a disaster area in Lake County due to the significant damage sustained by the storms last week. This allows for county employees to prioritize the protection of local lives and property above all else, contingent on compliance from citizens with emergency measures implemented by disaster response personnel. Access to debris-removal resources, personnel, general equipment, fuel, generators and more is now easier and and expected to be available on a longer timeline thanks to this declaration.

Four NWI high schools ranked in the top 25 best high schools list, according to the 2026 U.S. News and World Report. U.S. News & Worlds created this ranking by evaluating college readiness, state assessment proficiency, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate. The schools ranked in the top 25 are as follows:

NIPSCO has reported that last week’s storms caused damage to the tune of more than 1,500 power lines and necessitated the replacement of about 2.1 million feet of wire. These historic storms resulted in the largest outage that NIPSCO has ever seen in its service area - a total of 370,000 outages at peak. Tuesday, Aug 11th’s storm damaged five transmission towers alone, forcing the utility company to pull together 1,440 line workers and another 276 vegetation management crews as result.

Speaking of NIPSCO’s response to the historic storms we’ve experience, many in Gary, Merrillville, East Chicago, Portage, Hammond, Hobart and Dyer are still waiting for power to restored in a meaningful way. The remaining 74,000 customers (at the time of writing), which includes residents of towns mostly restored to full operation as well, have launched complaints at NIPSCO for unevenly servicing areas - saying that the slow-moving repairs and uneven timelines have been unacceptable. Viral campaigns and national news have covered these continued outages in earnest as well, pointing out the ever-increasing rate hikes for residents and unreliable reporting from the utility company as reasons for the intense dissatisfaction of residents. Not to mention, thousands of people who are waiting for power are without reliable shelter, access to food and electricity, and struggling under normal circumstances. This whole ordeal serves as a reminder to be kind to your neighbors and help out. The only way out of things like this is with the collective effort of community!

The Dig the Dunes Beer Run & Wine Walk will be starting up on April 23rd, running once a month through the summer and early fall. A new spot in the Dunes area will be selected each month, with a 2-3 mile walk/run taking place before the group kicks back to enjoy a drink along the lakeshore. Starting on April 25th, and running every Saturday through August, Indiana Dunes National Park’s 1966 Hiking Challenge begins! 19 hikes that cover 66 miles of the Dunes Park trails, celebrating the foundation of the park in 1966. Every Saturday at 8:00 am, hokes will take place in different areas of the park ranging from 1-7 miles. Complete them all and you earn a free 1966 Hiking Challenge sticker to show off to the world.
