The Call to Explore:

This is your Thursday edition of NWI Explored, for February 26th, 2026. The winter weather is sticking around for now, but we’re right around the corner from a new month! March is fast approaching and our Monday edition will reflect that fully. Even still, we here at NWI Explored are hoping that your 2026 has been going well. Hopefully, the harsh whiplash of weather and the march forward of time didn't put too much of a damper on your month. March is a new month - with new excitements, new possibilities, and new experiences - so let’s make it a good one!

One question I have for everyone before we get into the nitty-gritty of your Thursday NWIE: when we present the full list of events to you, is it tough to read? We want to make sure we are offering the widest scope of events we possibly can, so our vision of the running slate of events has expanded with time. At the current moment, that means this newsletter balloons in length at the beginning of each month and weans down as the month progresses. In the interest of keeping everything readable and easily found, we had the thought of developing a digital calendar where we can feed all of the events into it and present it to you in a more digestible format. Is that something that the Explorers would find more useful, or is the current format working well enough for the time being? Let us know! Send an email to [email protected] and fill us in how you think we should present events to the people. Thanks for reading!

The Weather Forecast for the Weekend of February 26th

Today in NWI

Today in NWI

  • Before the weather update, I just wanted to provide a couple of updates to stories that we’ve covered previously

    • Porter and LaPorte Counties are set to join a specialized organization focused on reducing violent gun crimes and bringing criminals to justice through firearm tracing.

      • We outlined this potential bill some weeks ago, when it passed the State Senate unanimously, but it has now passed the House unanimously as well. Senate Enrolled Act 148 will now go to Republican Gov. Mike Braun's desk to be signed into law. The Indiana Crime Guns Task Force was created in 2021 in Central Indiana, but has expanded out to Fort Wayne and Lake County with Porter and LaPorte being the latest additions to the efforts.

    • United Steelworkers Local 7-1 and BP have yet to reach a contract agreement, with the strike still ongoing at the time of writing.

      • BP has released statements, saying that their employees at the Whiting Refinery are among the top 10% of earners in the state of Indiana and are willing to increase the average wage by $7 an hour. USW Local 7-1 President Eric Schultz expressed concerns that these wage increases will come on the back of proposed union job eliminations, specifically in the environmental department.

      • The main dispute at the bargaining table has to do with the recategorization of jobs at the refinery, specifically union jobs. It seems that BP is actively trying to cut out large sections of union jobs and replace those positions with contractors. Schultz has said this is the biggest hurdle they have yet to clear in negotiations, claiming 20% of jobs at the refinery would get recategorized should BP get their way.

Otherwise, here is your weather forecast for the weekend of February 26th, 2026. We’re going to be experiencing some more weather whiplash tomorrow, peaking back up into the high 50s for a moment, before dropping back down into 30s with a chance of snow. That’s just the beauty of living in Northwest Indiana!

More Events to Come…

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region and Indiana writ large.

  • A Chicago Man filed to run as a Republican candidate for Congress in Northwest Indiana using a Nazi-associated nickname.

    • The Indiana Election Commission voted on Wednesday to terminate the potential candidacy of Richard Benedict “Sieg Heil” Mayers, after Lake County Republican Chairman Randy Niemeyer challenged the candidate's eligibility to run. This Mr. Mayers did not appear to contest the challenge.

  • We reported about NIPSCO holding community meetings this week about the rising energy costs faced by many across the Region and in the state of Indiana writ large.

    • Locals flocked to Porter County Fairgrounds seeking answers about the rising utility costs from NIPSCO, where 30 representatives from the company were on hand to answer questions and help customers sign up for financial assistance programs currently on offer. On-site reports claim that there was a heavy security presence at the event, with calls to the company escalating and continued protests taking place across the Region. Make your voices heard NWI and demand answers as to why the citizens are footing the bill for data centers none of us want and being stuck with rising costs without explanation.

  • The Indiana House voted 95-4 on Tuesday to endorse the current proposal to build a new Chicago Bears stadium at a site near Wolf Lake in Hammond.

    • The measure will now go back to the Senate for final approval, potentially passing through to Gov. Mike Braun’s desk as soon as today. Braun has said already that he intends to sign the legislation as quickly as he can, leaving the decision up to the Bears on whether or not the proposed construction goes forward.

  • Relatedly, concerns across the NWI region have been raised after a proposal for tax hikes in Lake and Porter County in order to fund the Bears stadium was announced.

    • Indiana is offering $2 billion to help build this proposed new stadium, and those funds will come with tax changes for the citizens of the areas surrounding the stadium - which apparently includes Porter County, located more than 20 miles away from the proposed stadium site. The 1% food and beverage tax hike is just one proposed way the state is planning on funding the Bears stadium, but many in the Region (especially Porter County officials and residents) don't think they should be stuck footing the bill. We will be keeping a close eye on the developments of these tax changes, as well as any future developments regarding the Bears stadium.

  • We discussed a resolution brought before the Valpo City Council a few weeks ago by Councilman Robert Cotton: a resolution that condemned the actions of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security in Minneapolis, actions of which led to the death of multiple US citizens - Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti. That resolution has been reintroduced, and approved as of Monday.

    • The resolution, proposed by councilwoman Ellen Kapitan, amended language from councilman Cotton’s proposal and acts as a formal statement from the City Council against the violent actions and illegal tactics deployed by ICE and DHS. The 5-2 vote reiterated the City’s support for civil rights and the need for due process, as well as sympathy for the families of innocent victims of these unlawful actions.

  • West Side Leadership Academy Principal Carl Scott will not be leading Gary Community School Corporation's only traditional high school this upcoming school year, the School board announced this week. No reason was given for his termination.

  • United Steelworkers District 7 has endorsed St. John Police Chief Steven Flores in his bid for Lake County sheriff.

  • Construction for Valparaiso Community School’s alternative high school project has begun.

    • Valparaiso Alternative Learning Experience (VALE) will be at the site of the old Hayes Leonard School, off of US 30. Financing was approved for the new development last fall and teaching has continued with construction ramping up. The expansion will include a new building for the school's IT, maintenance and CTE offerings. The project is projected to be finished in the summer of 2027.

The VALE school development being constructed, February 2026
