I hope you’ve been enjoyed this break from the inclement winter weather that we’ve been having. One question I have for everyone: do you want more visuals in the newsletter? The balance between providing as much information as possible and making the email that goes out untenably long is always a tough one, so we want to gauge interest in how the newsletter is presented! Let us know via [email protected] or shoot us a DM on Instagram. We’re still winding back up from a brutal January, but rest assured 2026 will be a big year for NWI Explored and, of course, for all you - The Explorers. On with the newsletter!

The recent set of unseasonably warm weather will cease today, with the potential for severe storms taking shape tonight and colder temps washing in over the weekend.
The National Weather Service issued a severe weather warning for Thursday, with central Illinois and Indiana under the greatest risk of showers and thunderstorms. If these storms do produce, the potential for tornadoes, damaging winds and hail would go up as well. Temperatures will drop to the 40s and high 30s on Friday and hold that way until next week.
Here is your weather forecast for the weekend of February 19th, 2026.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘
Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region and Indiana writ large.
The Republican-controlled Indiana State General Assembly gave final approval on Tuesday to a statewide ban on ranked choice voting, a provision that would ensure the state electoral system cannot guarantee a candidate that wins public office had the backing of a majority of voters.
Under ranked choice voting, voters select their to choice in each race (like normal) but are given the option to rank the rest of the candidates accordingly. If no candidate achieves majority support with first-place rankings, the candidate with the lowest number of first choices has their top rankings redistributed to other candidates based on who ever ranked second overall, and that process continues until one candidate reaches a majority. Indiana’s current electoral system recognizes the person who receives the most votes for an office as winner, whether they have majority support of the populous or not. Republican Gov. Mike Braun will sign this statewide ban on ranked choice voting into law when he signs Senate Enrolled Act 12, and the ban will take place July 1.
Indiana State General Assembly also voted in favor of legislation late last week that would compel all local units of government in Indiana, which would include public schools and universities, to assist ICE agents without question or qualm.
Senate Bill 76, which received majority support from the Republican-controlled House, builds upon Indiana’s existing sanctuary city ban by declaring that local governmental units cannot, in any manner, limit or restrict enforcement by ICE. This bill also prohibits policies, written or unwritten, that would limit cooperation with ICE, implores county jails and courts to follow federal immigration detainer requests, and outlines a process for punishment of Indiana businesses that knowingly employ illegal immigrants. On top of all that, the bill will grant additional powers to Republican Attorney General Todd Rokita in enforcement of these measures - including seeking court injunctions to halt noncompliance, civil penalties for each violation, and other punitive measures.
The Indiana House gave approval on Monday to a piece of legislation that would grant three additional alcohol sale permits to the city of Schererville for restaurants and eight additional licenses to restaurants along the transit development in downtown Michigan City.
This legislation was passed with the goal of boosting local economic development in communities that have too few available liquor licenses since Indiana’s population-based permit system does not take into consideration specific region’s food culture and scene. A separate proposal, which will give 10 additional licenses to downtown Gary restaurants, is set for vote this week as well.
Hundreds of high school students across the Region took part in walkouts this past week and into this week, in protest of the actions of ICE and the federal government’s general immigration enforcement policy across the country.
Hammond Central High School, Morton High School, Griffith High School, Portage High School and Munster High School participated in the most public fashions - with hundreds of students holding signs and flags, chanting and making their voices heard. Find some images from the protests below.

State lawmakers have proposed and endorsed a change to the fundamental structure of Indiana’s Constitution, which would give judges greater authority in keeping individuals accused of crimes locked in jail before trial.
The current structure of the Indiana Constitution necessitates that every person arrested for a crime, with a couple of exceptions, has the opportunity to obtain pre-trial release by posting bail. This constitutional amendment which would make pre-trial bail much more limited in the state will be on the ballot in the Nov. 3 General Election for voters to decide on.
BP has announced plans to clear out and secure abandoned pipelines in Munster after the noted appearance of oil sheens and strong odors in the region in January, the second such incident in recent months.
BP told this to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, with crews out at the site to work on this for weeks in the Briar Creek Park and Twin Creek neighborhoods. They are expected to backfill in the Sommerset and Briar Creek neighborhoods soon.
East Chicago is working to bring broader access to fresh groceries for its residents after efforts to bring in Aldi or Pete’s Fresh Market fell short.
Mayor Anthony Copeland said recently that the city has worked to bring another major supermarket to the Twin City for a while, but have yet to make any further progress on attracting one. Investing in the future of East Chicago is a top priority for Copeland, as East Chicago has the only free bus system in the Region and hundreds of new single-family housing recently built. He wants to make local businesses the priority for patronage and not make residents feel they have to go out of town in order to access their main necessities.

“My hometown... was always there, at all times, unchanging. What I think... is not that we go back to our hometowns, but that someday our hometowns come back into each of our hearts.”
