Bad news is good business. Not everyone buys it.

Every morning, financial news follows the same script. Headlines panic, coverage catastrophises, and somewhere inside the noise is the story that actually matters — the one that tells you where the opportunity sits, not just where the fear is pointing.

Most sources have stopped looking. The alarm is easier to sell.

The Daily Upside was created by Wall Street insiders for readers who crave real insight over recycled anxiety. Five minutes of global business and finance, before the noise sets the agenda — just the facts, context, and analysis your decisions need.

Join 1M readers — including managing directors and principals at some of Wall Street’s largest institutions — who trust The Daily Upside to filter through the chaos.

The upsides are always there. We’ll find them before breakfast.

🏘️The Lowdown🏘️

A lowdown on what’s happening in NWI and the State of Indiana writ large.

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration announced this week that they would implement a moratorium on Applied Behavior Analysis provider agencies, under the guise of strengthening quality of service and integrity.

Applied Behavior Analysis is a therapeutic treatment offered to children with autism, so this change in the IFSSA’s Medicaid policy will make it harder for families to cover costs associated with this treatment. The moratorium applies to newly established businesses providing ABA for children with autism and prevents them from billing Indiana Medicaid for treatment costs - reducing access for families across the state.

As locked out BP Whiting Refinery workers await a resolution to their months long contract dispute, Crown Point joins a growing list of local municipalities who have approved resolutions to support laborers currently out of work.

Hammond and East Chicago were the first two cities to pass resolutions reinforcing support for workers at the BP Whiting Refinery. These resolutions are acts of good will, reaching out to NWI families and the broader community to recognize the hardship that hundreds of families have been put under due to this worker’s lockout. As of the time of writing, a resolution to this ongoing lockout has not been finalized, but BP and USW Local 7-1 representatives will be meeting this upcoming Friday, June 10th, to continue negotiations.

A multi-phase project to resurface portions of Ridge Road (through Gary and parts of Calumet Township) has begun as of this week.

The first portion of Ridge Road that will be resurfaced is located between Colfax Street and Whitcomb Street. In Mid-June, a stretch from Hatcher Blvd. to Harrison Street will be resurfaced. Then, the area from Whitcomb Street to Hatcher Blvd. will be resurfaced into next year. The City of Gary and Lake County are taking on different parts of this multi-part resurfacing plan. Anyone travelling on Ridge Road during this month should expect lane closures, stops, and disruption to flow of traffic while the project is ongoing.

Amidst multiple billion dollar data center projects across the area, Amazon Web Services has announced plans to restore 425 acres of native habitat along the Kankakee River - nearby where they’re about to start building a data center outside of Wheatfield.

The company is pursuing the construction of multiple data centers in the area, with three water replenishment projects in NWI to offset the water input needed to run the massive cloud computing buildings. Alongside those plans, 425 acres along Bogus Run - a Kankakee River waterway- will be restored, and 325 acres of Shirley Heinze Land Trust’s “Big Eastern” property will be subject to invasive vegetation culling to restore the land there. AWS says that they will also allocate funds to restore woodlands in the area, establish native sand prairie areas and monitor the area in the long-term as well. These restoration and conservation efforts come on the back of profound controversy around the environmental impact of these massive data center projects - with some studies claiming that data centers consume around 5 million gallons of water every day, polluting local water sources and pulling in massive amounts of energy as well.

Republican Governor Mike Braun has announced plans to continue the suspension of state gasoline excise tax and state sales tax on gasoline, for at least another month.

The suspension of these tax collections on gasoline began in April, with Indiana gas prices dropping by 62 cents by the end of the month and holding at this lower rate through May and into June. Currently, Indiana is among the lowest in the country in gas prices.

➡️What’s In, What’s Out? ➡️

A quick summary of the businesses around NWI that have come and those that have gone
  • Rosati’s Pizza has taken over the former Sanfratello’s Pizza spot in Dyer. The same franchisee who owns the Rosati’s in Schererville, Crown Point, Cedar Lake and Hobart will be overseeing this location and has been remodeling the space for the past three months.

  • Back in Time Donuts and Creamery has opened for business in downtown Crown Point, offering sweet treats and creamy delights with a flair of 80s nostalgia to go with - as well as a pairing of locally roasted Steamwhistle Coffee. Owner Tom Weddel also owns Crown Point Toys and Collectibles and Crown Point Records, has opened the sweets shop with his brother.

  • Scooter’s Coffee, another of the drive-through coffee spots popping up like weeds around NWI, has opened a new location in DeMotte.

  • Buenos Dias Cafe has taken over the former Flako’s Tacos location at the Griffith-Merrillville Airport. Bueno Dias Cafe offers breakfast and lunch, with classics like tacos and quesabirria sitting alongside country-fried steaks and denver omelettes.

  • Pizzeria at the Point has opened its doors in Lowell. A family-owned joint that promises to offer the flavors of Chicago’s South Side to NWI, their menu reflects that: with tavern-style pizzas, deep dish, Chicago-style hot dogs and old-school milkshakes and ice cream.

  • Harold’s Chicken, legendary Chicagoland chicken joint, has opened a new location in Hobart. Fresh fried chicken made to order with all of the chicken ship accoutrement to boot: what’s not to like about that?

  • Family Express has opened an experimental new “megastore” outside of Valpo at Division St. and St. Rd. 49. This new location has a truck stop, car wash, pet wash, and a full restaurant inside. Normal Family Express locations are usually 2,400 sq. ft, but this new concept is a whopping 5,800 sq. ft. Whereas most locations offer food ready to grab and go, this location will be made to order with both indoor and outdoor seating. Think Wawa or Sheetz but with a Family Express flair.

  • Tony’s Table in LaPorte has closed its doors after a few years of business. Locals enjoyed their mix of breakfast/brunch offerings, live music and lively patio. The owners took to social media to say that their closing was due to external issues that necessitated making a move out of their current location.

  • Dairy Belle has closed down its semi-recently opened Crown Point location. Dairy Belle has been a Region staple for over 75 years, with locations remaining in Schererville and Cedar Lake and its flagship Hammond spot still churning out classic ice cream fare.

  • BJ’s Wholesale Club will be opening up a membership-based warehouse retail location in Portage later this year. Similar to Costco or Sam’s Club, BJ’s stocks more than 7,000 items at wholesale prices - from produce to outdoor furniture to a full-service deli counter. Exact timing on a grand opening is currently unknown.
