The Call to Explore

Happy Monday, Explorers!

We hope this issue of NWI Explored finds you well relaxed after Halloween AND Daylight Savings this past weekend. Between the partying and the time change, Sunday was hopefully a day of rest and relaxation for you all. We go now into the heart of Autumn: the month of November.

The hope is that very soon, we will have a Holiday Event Guide for all of you so that you can navigate the busiest season of them all with a profound sense of awareness - with all the Christmas and Holiday activities you’d want to know about all across NWI. We will communicate as we move forward on when exactly the guide will be hitting your inboxes!

Other than that, Happy November. Take it easy this week while you get adjusted to the full swing of fall and the ever-decreasing amount of sunlight. We’ll be here, continuing to make NWI Explored the best that we can for all of you.

Happy Exploring!

BP Profits surge to $8.5 billion for Previous Quarter

While 800 Region laborers remain out of work due to a never-ending bargaining dispute, BP has reported higher profits in the previous quarter - eclipsing last quarter’s $5.7 billion in profit by almost $3 billion. Operating cash flow for the company also increased by about $4 billion. BP continues to lock out workers at the Whiting refinery, unrelenting in their desire to weaken collective bargaining rights for their union laborers and make future contract negotiations more difficult for USW Local 7-1.

USW Submits Counter-Proposal to U.S. Steel Amid Ongoing Contract Negotiations

The new proposal was submitted last Wednesday by USW, as agreements on pay, healthcare, benefits and safety remain on the fritz. U.S. Steel’s last proposal asked for a 5 year contract, instead of the sought after 4 year contract, as well as increased health care costs. The company has walked back the health care proposal, but has yet to weigh in on USW’s new proposal. Tens of thousands of laborers will be affected by these contract negotiations.

NiSource, NIPSCO Parent Company, Reports High Revenue So Far This Year

Their third quarter profits totalled $129.5 million, which brings the total for this fiscal year to $685.7 million - which is 2% up from their recorded profits around this time last year. Amid huge capital expenditure plans in the coming years, among them data center projects, NiSource has often elected to pass those costs off to the customers through rate hikes - hence the ever-increasing profits. Expected base growth over the next 7 years is supposed to be between 8-10%.

Utility Work on U.S. 231 will close Intersection for 2 Weeks

The intersection of Parrish Ave and U.S. 231 will be closed for two weeks starting today in order to take care of utility relocations ahead of the construction of a planned roundabout. Alternate routes along U.S. 41, U.S. 30 and State Road 55, as well as detours locally on 101st Avenue, Cline Avenue, and 117th Avenue will be available.

Federal Election Monitors in Lake County Will Not Be Entering Polling Locations

After a meeting between Lake County election officials and representatives from the U.S. Justice Department last week, it was confirmed that election monitors sent at the behest of the U.S. Assistant Attorney General and Justice Department would not be allowed to set up inside of polling locations. These federal election monitors, which are being sent to both Lake County and Marion County in Indiana, will be outside of polling places conducting voluntary voter interviews. Voters can decline to be interviewed by these officials for any or no reason if they so wish.

A Look Backwards at NWI History

Johnson signs the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore into being - 60 years ago this week

On Nov. 5, 1966 - 60 years ago this Thursday - President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Public Law 89-761, authorizing the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and capping a preservation fight that began in 1899 with University of Chicago botanist Henry Chandler Cowles and was carried for decades by Ogden Dunes teacher Dorothy Buell and her Save the Dunes Council. The deal, championed by Illinois Sen. Paul H. Douglas - nicknamed 'the third senator from Indiana' - paired the lakeshore with the Burns Waterway Harbor (today's Port of Indiana) in what became known as the Kennedy Compromise. The original lakeshore covered just 8,330 acres; later expansions grew it past 15,000 acres, and in February 2019 it was renamed Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana's first national park.

🔁 What's In, What's Out
Who's opening their doors — and who's closing them — this week.
Chef Chris Pappas's Meraki Hospitality Group is bringing scratch-made Italian — house-made pasta, stone-fired Neapolitan pizza, steaks and tableside sauce pours — to the former Ricochet Tacos spot on the courthouse square. The showpiece is the bar, where cocktails get shaken as they whizz overhead through clear pneumatic tubes left over from the building's bank days — only the second spot in the country with flying cocktails — and they're aiming to open by Nov. 13, dinner only to start.
🟢 Now open
The longtime Burns Harbor wood-fired Neapolitan pizza place is relocating to the former El Salto at 757 Indian Boundary Road in Chesterton, a much larger space. Expect the same great, innovative food - with more space to enjoy it.
🟢 Now open
The fast-growing drive-thru coffee chain has started construction at 7837 Indianapolis Blvd., just off the Borman Expressway across from Cabela's.
🟢 Now open
