🗺️The Call to Explore 🗺️
Happy Memorial Day, Explorers! We hope the long weekend was kind to you and you were able to enjoy what ended up being some beautiful early summer weather. Due to the long weekend and the federal holiday yesterday, we took a breather from the regular Monday post to enjoy ourselves. Today, we’re sending out an abbreviated version of our normal beginning of the week edition to keep everyone aware of what’s going on in the last week of the month. There will be a little less news and a little less reporting in general, but stay tuned for the end of the week post. We will be breaking into June events, looking forward to what this NWI summer has in store for all of us, but that will be saved for another time. Again, hope everyone had a great long weekend and we hope you all find some ways to explore NWI this week. Happy exploring!

🏘️The (Mini) Lowdown🏘️
An abbreviated lowdown on what’s happening in NWI and the State of Indiana writ large.
One week after Purdue University President Mung Chiang announced his departure from the university, the board of trustees has announced that former President of the University and former Governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels will return to the school as interim President. Daniels served as president of Purdue for a decade and will return to this position while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
The Indiana Supreme Court agreed last week, in a 4-1 decision, to let stand a decision that terminated Gary’s long-running lawsuit against gun manufacturers and retailers they believed should be held legally responsible for the human costs of gun violence in the city. Two years ago, the Republican-majority Indiana General Assembly and at-the-time Gov. Eric Holcomb approved an Act that explicitly targetted the City of Gary’s lawsuit, prohibiting a local unit of government from ever attempting to hold gun companies legally responsible for any elements of their products retroactive to Aug 27, 1999.
An independent transportation study report done by RoadRisk AI found that Interstate 80/94, Interstate 65, the Indiana Toll Road, and the Merrilville corridor of US 30 to be the deadliest roads in the area. These roadways were identified as the most likely to produce serious or fatal crashes in the next 12 months.
NIPSCO has estimated that the energy utility has lost $11.5 million thus far, following a federal order to keep two coal-fired units at the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield running past their scheduled retirement. The order came after concerns of potential electricity shortages in the Midwest, with some under the impression that the impending construction of massive data center campuses across the state were the main reason for the continuation of these generators operation.
After two months of paused talks, the BP Whiting Refinery has made a new offer to the currently locked out USW Local 7-1 laborers - of whom have been out of work since March 17th. This proposal is meant to bring the two parties back to the negotiating table and move them closer to an agreement. While BP maintains that they are negotiating in good faith and listening to union worker’s concerns, union representatives have said that the new proposal would still cut dozens of union jobs and reject a proposal for a voluntary severance agreement and workers protections post-lockout. The propositioned 13% pay increases comes only after job classifications experience pay cuts, with some outright not getting a raise at all. Proposed bonuses would be half of what they are under the current contract, and lump-sum payments would come only after the union agrees to eliminate the aforementioned union jobs, take pay cuts and give up bargaining rights.

➡️What’s In, What’s Out? ➡️
A quick summary of the businesses around NWI that have come and those that have gone
The Layover, a new dining concept from chef and proprietor of the recently opened Lincoln + Wicker in Schererville Jay Ruff, will be opening this year in St. John. The chef-guided bar/restaurant offers small plates, craft cocktails, and an alluring, late-night atmosphere with a concept rooted in the idea of a layover between flight destinations. Along with the airport and transit theme, the space is adorned with an underground, punk-esque atmosphere- inspired by the music of Talking Heads, Iggy Pop and other NY rock legends. The Layover will offer dishes like Neapolitan pizzas, kebabs, a raw bar that includes oysters, and a variety of internationally inspired offerings as well.
Cousins Maine Lobster Food Truck will be at two different NWI locations in the coming week or so. Today, they will be at the Dyer Town Center from 11 am to 7pm. Next Tuesday, they will be located at Tractor Supply Co. in Merrillville from 11am to 7pm.

The BBQ Ribcage has opened up in Chesterton at 1331 Broadway. This new barbeque spot is carry-out only at the moment, serving up ribs with a Memphis style dry rub, rib tips, turkey tips, hot links, and all the sides you’ve come to expect from a BBQ spot.
