Today in NWI

Well, that break from the winter extremities was short lived, huh? At the time of writing, we got smacked in the face with a snow squall early on this Wednesday morning, with an ensuing winter storm that made a mess out of everything. It really was like a flip of a switch from Tuesday into Wednesday, but isn’t that what makes living in this area such a joy? It’s like a slot machine. Each pull of the lever comes with all the possibilities in the world. Some days you hit a jackpot, and other days you’re resigned to your home because a snow squall tears through your neighborhood. We’ll cover some of the related happenings with the inclement weather in The Lowdown, but it was certainly an interesting development for the week.

For the moment, here is your weekend forecast for NWI.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.

Thanks to sudden inclement weather, households across NWI experienced power outages and traffic disruptions during the wee commuting hours of Wednesday morning.

  • Heavy snowfall and strong winds seemingly came out of nowhere on Wednesday morning, handicapping much of the Region as people across Porter and LaPorte County were served the most severe weather warnings. Crashes were reported along I-94 at multiple spots, I-80 around the Cline Avenue Bridge, the intersection of Froberg Road and Ransom Road in Valpo, and various other traffic disruptions dotted the Region. NIPSCO reported 1,500 power outages on Wednesday morning, mostly in Valpo and Michigan City. It was certainly one way to start off Hump Day.

Porter and LaPorte Counties might be added to a specialized state task force centered around combatting violent crime by tracing firearms used in crimes.

  • Tuesday saw the Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law vote unanimously to expanding the territory served by the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force into Porter and LaPorte Counties, citing that NWI experienced a categorically more violent summer than years previous as core reason for the expansion of the Task Force’s scope. The legislation will now go to the Senate Appropriations Committee for review before going to the full Senate for a decision.

The Cedar Lake Stracks has sold a winning Powerball ticket to a NWI resident, totally $50,000 - the third highest prize available in the game.

The Indiana Senate has voted in favor of a provision to make the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich the official state sandwich.

The Winfield Town Council has stated their opposition to a pending State bill that would allow a developer to transfer 5% of the town’s total acreage to the jurisdiction of Crown Point, it’s neighbor.

  • Authored by state Sen. Rick Niemeyer, the Bill is currently awaiting a hearing in the Senate’s Committee on Local Government. If passed, the bill would allows landowners eligible within its confines to have their properties disannexed by the town in which they sit, returning the land to unincorporated status.

I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was. Likewise, I never imagined that home might be something I would miss.
