The Lowdown on All The NWI News You Need To Know About

Today in NWI

We’re looking at even more temperate NWI Winter weather, with mild chances of some more rain and even a little bit of snow. For the early part of January, I’d say that’s not too bad. Here’s your weather forecast for the weekend.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.

Nearly 92% of Indiana high school seniors graduated from their respective programs in 2025, marking the third year of increases in this metric since 2022.

  • The graduation rate for public schools, including charter schools, rose across the last few years, with a similar increase in graduation rates for private schools. Several demographic groups also performed higher year over year, with ~2% increases across the mentioned groups.

East Chicago native Guy Rhodes has spent the past decade working as a lighting director and photographer for Rail Events Productions: the group that puts on the national Polar Express Train Ride railroad tour.

  • Rhodes, who now lives in Hobart, has helped to bring the spirit of Christmas all across the country through his contributions to the long-running show. Based on the 2004 holiday movie of the same name, The Polar Express has spread christmas cheer across all ages since release. It’s become an instrumental part of the Holiday season, and Rhodes’ contributions have only helped to embolden that spirit.

Indiana Dunes State Park is eyeing a location for a 2nd entrance to the park.

  • The new entrance, designed to help alleviate the long summer wait times to enter the park, will be located along the shoreline on Tremont Street - about a mile east of the current park entrance off of State Road 49. Tremont Street is currently closed to vehicles at the railroad tracks running along Dunes Highway, but an expansion there could allow drivers to get direct access to the park and it’s amenities.

The Indiana House Public Policy Committee agreed on Tuesday to advance legislation authorizing online sales of Hoosier Lottery Tickets.

  • House Bill 1078, if passed, would allow Indiana to join Illinois and 17 other states in making iLottery games legal. Those aged 18 and up could sign up for an online Hoosier Lottery account and purchase lottery tickets for Powerball, Hoosier Lotto, MegaMillions, or buy digital scratch-off tickets. This is envisioned as a new channel to deliver expansion of lottery games to even more people in the state. What the bill does not legalize is online casino games, so online slots or card games will not be a part of this legalization effort.

Mexirican, a new Mexican-Puerto Rican fusion restaurant, has opened up inside of the Southlake Mall in Hobart.

  • Owner and operator Jose Ortiz - owner of Trendsetters Barbershop inside the mall and Trendsetters Bar and Grill in Gary - has brought Mexican and Puerto Rican flavors to the Region before, but he’ll be doing it now at a new location. Mexirican will be serving tacos, tostados, tortas, sopes, jibarito sandwiches, bistec, and arrachera bowls, among a load of other offerings. This should be an exciting dining concept for the mall, with Ortiz already having expansion plans should the restaurant perform well.

U.S. Rep. Jim Baird of Indiana, who was injured in a car crash en route to Washington D.C on Monday, has been released from the hospital.

  • Baird walked away from the wreck with nothing more than road rash and some heavy bruising. His wife, Danise Baird, was also injured in the crash, but is in stable condition and will remain in the hospital for a few more days. Rep. Baird represents the counties of Newton and Jasper in Northwest Indiana and has served the area since 2019.
