The Call to Explore:

Welcome, Explorers, to the first NWI Explored newsletter of March 2026! We’ve found ourselves at the beginning of a new month, with a fresh slate of events and even more new stuff to talk about all around NWI. We’re so glad that many of you have been following us along this journey for five months now, and our group is only growing as the days go by. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you so much for supporting this little thing we’re trying to build. The main goal of NWI Explored is to build a sense of community around this varied and incredibly unique place that we’ve all decided to call home, and with each new Explorer we’re moving one step closer to that goal. Thanks again, Explorers! We’re so glad to have you here.

One question I will continue to posit to our readers: when we present the full list of events to you, is it tough to read? We want to make sure we are offering the widest scope of events we possibly can, so our vision of the running slate of events has expanded with time. At the current moment, that means this newsletter balloons in length at the beginning of each month and weans down as the month progresses. In the interest of keeping everything readable and easily found, we had the thought of developing a digital calendar where we can feed all of the events into it and present it to you in a more digestible format. Is that something that the Explorers would find more useful, or is the current format working well enough for the time being? Let us know! Send an email to [email protected] and fill us in how you think we should present events to the people. Thanks for reading!

Brief Updates About The State of Things Around NWI

  • After a brief 10-day closure, downtown Crown Point’s mainstay Tavern on Main has reopened with much more than just a fresh coat of paint. The spot has received a much needed glow-up": fresh paint, new floors, acoustic paneling to help with sound, new menu items, and a renewed sense of spirit. Check out some of the renovations at the pictures below

  • State lawmakers approved a provision on Wednesday that will make it so eligible Hoosiers, whose earnings this year include tips or overtime, will not be required to pay state or county income tax on that income when they file in 2027. As of right now, this will only be for the tax year 2026.

  • Enforcement by police of speed limits and stop signs on private roads within Lakes of the Four Seasons gated community will resume as of July 1. State lawmakers approved a two-year pilot program for LOFS to hire off-duty police officers to enforce state traffic laws within the gated community.

  • State Senator Mark Spencer, D-Gary, has won approval for legislation that would direct the Indiana Department of Agriculture to evaluate the possiblity of establishing community and urban microfarms within the state, including partnerships with Purdue University, local health departments, health care providers, and educational institutions. One such site that could see an infusion of microfarming is Gary itself, with its swaths of unused or abandoned land.

  • The parent company of the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond is weighing offers for a potential takeover, which includes a buyout from another gaming company and a possible management-led buyout. Caesars Entertainment Inc. operates three gaming properties in Indiana - the Horseshoe Casino’s in Hammond and Shelbyville, and Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Anderson. This buyout offer, coming from Fertitta Entertainment, could currently unknown changes to the establishments, but we will certainly keep you all updated as this story develops.

  • Region Sports Recap

    • Valparaiso High School has claimed the Girls gymnastics Sectional 1 title for the second year in a row, getting 111.175 points to beat out Portage. Regionals will take place next week at Portage.

    • Wheeler Bearcat Football will be under new leadership for the 2026 season, as Josh Wissing has been hired as the new head coach of Wheeler Football. Wissing was most recently offensive coordinator for Merrillville in 2024, leading the Pirates to one of the most prominent programs in the area during his tenure. He will be replacing Nick Testa, the Wheeler coach for the past three seasons, who announced his resignation in December.

    • Alger Boswell III, the head coach of Gary West Side Football, has announced his resignation. He took to Facebook on Friday to notify that “after a great deal of thought, prayer and reflection”, he would step down from his position as head coach after four seasons. Boswell held a 22-17 record for his four years as leader of the team, winning the Great Lakes Athletic Conference in 2022.

  • FLUID Coffeebar will be moving to a new spot in downtown Valpo, but regulars need not worry about having to walk too far. The new location will be down the street, in the old Toys in the Attic spot next to E & A Jewelers. This new location will be about double the size of their current flagship location, allowing them to grow even more than they already have. This comes on the heels of another new location opening up inside of the Indiana Dunes Welcome Center in Porter very soon.

Last but not least, here is your weather forecast for the midweek of March 2nd, 2026. We might be away from the harsh winter weather, but it doesn’t seem like we’re free of messy weather quite yet.

The Real Reason Your Utility Bills Have Gotten So High

A Special Report from NWI Explored

The most hot-button issue around NWI as of late is one that we’ve spent a lot of time talking about in this very newsletter: rising energy costs all across the state. Region residents have been particularly incensed about the sudden and somewhat unexplained hike in rates for electricity during one of the most intense cold spells we’ve had in quite some time, but the story isn’t quite as simple as the construction of those data centers no one wants. Like many things, the story goes back a few years, to decisions made by the Indiana State Senate that most of us probably didn’t even know about. To understand the real reason that we’re all stuck paying 50% more (heck, even 100% more for some) on our NIPSCO bills, we have to look back at some legislative decisions that flew under the radar. We are gonna have to look at some long, anonymous sounding bills that actually, when you look at what they say, have slowly eroded the consumer protections set in place to prevent this very thing from happening.

Going back to 2013, we can look at 9 (nine!) different legislative decisions that have directly contributed to the creation of this environment: where NIPSCO can act without little to no oversight and charge whatever they see fit. Anti-consumer laws have long been the source of these exorbitant charges and never-ending justifications for price hikes, but a lot of us weren’t even aware of them happening. That’s often the way that corporations like this want it to be, so that no questions are asked about why we suddenly have to foot the bill for a bunch of stuff we didn’t even know we could be charged for. Below, you will find a detailed list of each legislative act that was passed, what they entailed, and how that has worked to create the scenario that we currently find ourselves in.

  • Senate Enrolled Act 560 (2013): created the Transmission,

Distribution, and Storage Improvement (TDSIC) charge allowing

utilities to immediately charge consumers for 80% of the cost of

system improvements without going through a rate case.

  • House Enrolled Act 1470 (2019): reversed a court ruling that the

IURC (Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission) had been too generous in approving TDSIC requests by the utility companies, including approving items that did not benefit consumers. The legislature quickly rewrote the TDSIC laws to ensure the utilities received what they requested.

  • House Enrolled Act 1417 (2023: overturned a Supreme Court decision that ruled the IURC had improperly allowed customers to be charged for $212

    million in coal-ash cleanup.

  • SEA 340 (2014) and SEA 412 (2015): killed Indiana's energy

efficiency program, Energizing Indiana, that benefited consumers

by reducing consumption by 399,432 megawatt hours of electricity

(enough to power 37,886 homes for a year), and offered assistance

with weatherizing homes and purchasing energy efficient

    appliances.

  • SEA 309 (2017) ended net metering in Indiana, making it more

difficult for Hoosiers to produce their own energy through rooftop

    solar.

  • HEA 1420 (2023) gave monopoly utilities a right of first refusal to

control construction of expensive transmission lines rather than

allowing outside companies to competitively bid on these projects

ultimately paid for by utility customers.

  • HEA 1421 (2023) and SEA 271 (2022) allow construction work in

progress (CWIP) for natural gas and small modular reactors. This

forces customers to pay for generation plants before they provide

any power and shifts the risk of cost overruns onto the backs of

    utility customers.

Each of these legislative decisions, as outlined above, have contributed to the situation we all see ourselves currently in: where it feels like no one cares that we’re stuck footing the bill for a company focused only on growth and greed, funding data centers we don’t want and supplementing the power for corporations who have no interest in bringing anything back to these communities. Hopefully, you found this special report to be of use and interest.

We hope to be doing more things like this as we go forward, so that we can keep our Explorers informed about the issues that matter most. Let us know how you liked this experiment.

That’ll do it for this Monday Edition of NWI Explored. We hope you’re enjoying your March experience thus far. The month is just getting started and we have a whole lot more in store for you all. Be good to one another and we will see you on Thursday. Keep an eye out on our Instagram for more content as well. Thanks!

Happy Exploring,

Eric & Luke, The NWI Explored Team
