🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and headlines around the Region and Indiana writ large.

Republican Governor Mike Braun has announced an extension to last month’s suspension of Indiana’s state tax on gasoline, with a new suspension on Indiana’s 36 cent per gallon excise tax on gasoline lasting for the same duration.

  • Last month, Braun introduced a state energy emergency declaration to allow him to suspend state tax collections on gasoline - a 7% tax that averages out to ~23.3 cents per gallon - in order to combat spiking fuel costs due to the Trump administration’s ongoing war with Iran. Beginning this Friday, that suspension on gasoline taxes will continue through early June, with a new suspension of excise taxes on gasoline making early summer travel for Hoosiers that much easier. Region residents can expect (hopefully) a reduction of per gallon cost totaling ~60 cents per gallon starting toward the end of this week. The cost of this suspension of tax collection on gasoline appears in revenue previously earmarked for the Indiana Department of Transportation - totaling around $100 million in tax revenue that will not be going toward road funding and infrastructure repairs. This also comes after Braun’s previous halting of the gasoline tax, which adds an additional $50 million in lost funding for INDOT. Braun is said to be working with Indiana General Assembly and it’s Republican majority to create legislative changes to help fund INDOT in the future after these recent hiccups in road repair funding.

  • The other big thing to keep note of: Indiana law states that a state declaration of emergency can last a maximum of 60 days, which will line up with a June 7th deadline for this pause of gasoline tax collection. Two scenarios are possible after that date:

    • One: Braun convenes a special session of the Indiana General Assembly to create legislative change with regards to gasoline taxes and their collection, or: a special session is called in order to extend the emergency declaration in order to keep fuel costs low indefinitely.

    • Two: Post June 7th, Indiana residents can expect gas prices to jump back up as the state tax on gasoline and gasoline excise tax begin to be collected once again.

Below, you can find a brief recap of results from Tuesday’s primary elections as they effect NWI. There is simply too much across all the counties to recap, but if you would like to full information about the primary results, consult https://enr.indianavoters.in.gov/site/index.html to see results for each and every district and county across the state.

  • Porter County District 2 Commissioner was up for grabs after current commissioner Barb Regnitz announced she would challenge incumbent Rep. Frank Mrvan for House District 1. Dem. Kyle Nelson and Rep. Mike Brickner came out as winners in the Commissioner race and will be going head to head in November.

  • Two NWI state senators who opposed Trump’s redistricting plans for Indiana, an attempt to maintain the GOP majority in the state, were ousted from their positions in this primary. Incumbent Sen. Dan Dernulc lost to Trump-backed Trevor De Vries in the race for Indiana Senate District 1. James Starkey also unseated Sen. Rick Niemeyer in the race for Republican nomination for Indiana Senate District 6.

    • Note for readers: Indiana Senate District 1 represents Dyer, Griffith, Highland, Merrillville, St. John and Schererville

    • Indiana Senate District 6 represents south Lake County, Newton, Jasper and Benton counties.

  • In the race for two seats on Dyer Town Council, incumbent Annette Ludwig and newcomer Kyle Rizzo (who served as the chair of the Dyer Republican Party) won their respective nominations for 4th Ward and 5th Ward Council seats.

  • Jerry Williams won his race for Democratic nomination for Lake County Sheriff, winning around 26% of the votes in the race that contained six candidates. Williams winning this position come November would make him the first elected Black sheriff in Lake County history. He will be facing Republican candidate David Crane, who is running unopposed within his party.

  • Lake County Auditor Peggy Holinga Katona will no longer serve as a county official following an almost thirty year career in local politics, as she lost her Democratic primary against Lake County Recorder Gina Pimentel for the county auditor nomination. Katona was the subject of much controversy last month after her extended absence from the auditor’s office following a serious injury a few years ago, alongside a botched transition to a new accounting system that cost the county millions, and these seem to be the core reasons for voters wanting to replace her.

A special episode of FX’s hit television show “The Bear” dropped this week and it centers around the characters heading from Chicago to the Steel City itself, Gary, Indiana.

  • “The Bear” is a massively popular show, especially its first couple of seasons, and it has gotten a lot of attention in the Greater Chicagoland area for how much the show shoots on location in Chicago. Well, with this special in-between-seasons episode that came out this Tuesday, it seems the showrunners and stars wanted to pay respect to another local area by filming in and centering Gary. In the episode that takes place before the events of the first season, fittingly titled “Gary”, characters Mikey (Jon Bernthal) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) take a trip to the Steel City to deliver a mysterious “package”. They make their trip across the Chicago Skyway Bridge, with montage sequences showing shots of Broadway, the Jackson 5 house, and downtown Gary, before the duo takes a pit stop at the iconic Koney King restaurant. The episode is available to stream on Hulu and the fifth and final season of “The Bear” will be coming out later this summer.

There are a couple brief updates to the ongoing federal indictment of a locally-based illegal gambling ring, spearheaded by local business owner James Gerodemos

  • Gerodemos will not be released on bail and will remain in custody until trial. His brother, fellow defendant Chris Gerodemos, posted a $1 million bond and others indicted were asked to post a bond of $20,000. Arraignment is scheduled for May 14th.

  • Chicago restauranteur Filippo Rovito claimed to Gangster Report co-founder Scott Burnstein that Gerodemos’ illegal gambling ring had ties to organized crime within the city of Chicago and even stretching as far as to the northeast coast of the country. Rovito is one of the 22 individuals charged alongside Gerodemos in connection with this illegal gambling ring.

  • Based on information in the federal indictment of Gerodemos and his businesses, money laundering in connection with the illegal gambling ring through businesses like Gino’s Steakhouse and Paragon Restaurant were a family afffair. James’ daughter and nephew are accused of helping to launder money through their businesses, as stated in the indictment.

A quick summary of the businesses around NWI that have come and those that have gone
  • Panda Express will be coming to Dyer with a location opening soon at 919 Joliet St., next to Taco Bell and McDonald’s.

  • Chef Uli Gom is coming back to downtown Griffith where he made his name known with restaurants like Tapas Cafe and Flako’s Tacos. His new venture, Sangria Tapas Grill, opened up at 105 N. • The Sugar Bowl Restaurant in Michigan City has closed, but is looking for a new location. Their deal on the old location with a previous owner was voided by the new property owner, so they are without a home for the moment. They will be remaining in Michigan City should they find a new location to open up at.

  • Steel and Spice Caribbean Restaurant has opened up in downtown Gary at 752 Broadway. The upscale feeling spot has live music on the weekends and has already pulled in celebrity guests in Marlon Wayans and R&B group Mindless Behavior, while also boasting a menu of Caribbean classics and contemporary American classics.
