The Call to Explore:
Welcome back everyone! It’s February 4th, 2026 and that means it is time for your Thursday edition of NWI Explored. Hopefully, your February is off to a great start (minus the six more weeks of winter we’re due for). We’re all looking forward to clearer, less snowy weather and this week seems like a start at the very least. It’s been a somewhat quiet week, so we’re going to load up on events instead of news for this Thursday edition of NWIE. Let’s get into it.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘
Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.
The Moore townhome development in Michigan City will begin accepting new residents, starting in May.
Built by Bloomington-based Pyramid Properties, these eight townhomes are a part of a new housing development in the MC area. The project also reflects the profound amount of development that is happening in Michigan City as of late writ large. Multi-million dollar commercial developments are popping up all over the town, so it’s only fitting housing projects will be accompanying them. The developer of The Moore has said more townhome buildings are aiming to be completed this summer, as well.
Indiana House legislature introduced a bill on Monday that would make development in agricultural areas permited without a public hearing, variance, or any other official action if the area has soil that is poorly suited for farming.
House Bill 1333 will automatically authorize every project in an agricultural zoned area, notwithstanding any local ordinance to the contrary, should soil capability be classified between a 4 and an 8 by the USDA. Site plans would still have to be confirmed by local officials, in accordance with zoning regulations and the like, but there would be no way to stop developments from moving forward on agricultural zones that meet these conditions. Not even public opposition nor intervention from local government could halt development processes under this bill. The obvious conclusion to draw from this bill’s existence is that this will be a way for governances to ignore public opposition to the conversion of rural land into massive data centers - a hot button issue that has been met with staunch reproach across the country as of late.
The Northwest Indiana Oilmen are being dumped out of their current home at Oil City Stadium in downtown Whiting, to be replaced by one or two expansion teams.
The current teams eyed are one affiliated with the Chicago White Sox and another managed by the son of one of the managers of the White Sox. The Oilmen were a local favorite, having won five championships and sent multiple players to the majors. The full result of this excommunication remains to be seen.
Local woman Stephanie Talarek, aka “Chef Steph”, has created community food initiative Feed the Region - a organizing effort that will feed families in the Region with free, hot, family-sized meals for takeaway.
Their first meal drive will be happening tonight, February 5th at Nana Clare’s Kitchen in Valparaiso. The meals will be fresh-made bread and scratch-made pasta. Talarek has said that her and her team of over a dozen volunteers aim to provide 100 family-sized meals each week, with space to expand should demand outpace them. This is not only a fantastic way to combat food insecurity in the Region, but gives a convenient method for locals to volunteer their time as well. All the love in the world to Talarek and her team! Hope your event goes off without a hitch!
NIPSCO has received approval and property rezoning for the $5.7 billion expansion it plans to complete on the RM Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield.
NIPSCO’s plans here include building a new 2,600 megawatt combined-cycle gas plant, a gas peaker plant, and (of course) a data center. Jasper County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the rezoning of hundreds of rural acres in order for NIPSCO to complete its plans and retire its natural gas units. Plans to hire hundreds of construction workers and boost generation capacity are the main two reasons these plans met little resistance.
Crown Point City Council advanced new proposals on Monday that would allow growth of an existing business park and construction of a new housing development on the south side of the city.
Indiana House Bill 1119 ,which would authorize firing squad executions in the state of Indiana, was shot down on Monday with only one Republican representative voting “Yes”.
The Hegewisch Station on the South Shore Transit Line will be getting safety improvements, including gates, flashing lights and bells at pedestrian crossings - in response to an accidental death at the station this previous year.
Mayor of Gary Eddie Melton announced plans to replace the existing Brother’s Keeper homeless shelter with an entirely new construction, with development beginning in June of this year.
Governor Mike Braun announced this week that he will be aggressively pursuing fraud in any and all Indiana social welfare programs. These renewed efforts come in the wake of over 50 federal welfare convictions in Minnesota dating back to 2022.

“My hometown... was always there, at all times, unchanging. What I think... is not that we go back to our hometowns, but that someday our hometowns come back into each of our hearts.”
