The Call to Explore

Happy Monday, Explorers!

We have heard your responses to the poll last Thursday and will be using it to build new recurring sections out in the near future! Our main goal is to make NWI Explored better every single week and your feedback will be instrumental in doing so. As always, any questions, feedback and suggestions are welcome and can be sent to [email protected].

Outside of that, we’re fully in the swing of Autumn and we can’t be any more excited about what that means for all of us. Milder weather, super fun events and tons of different ways to explore NWI. Keep your eyes peeled for continual additions and changes as we learn how to build out the newsletter even more.

Lastly, a brief aside: The 22-game winning streak of my (and many of yours, I’m sure) alma mater Indiana University has been broken. A last second touchdown would’ve kept the nearly two year streak alive, but it was quite literally a toe touch too far for the Hoosiers. Nevertheless, IU is a fierce team and I firmly believe they will be back with a vengeance.

Enjoy your Monday issue of NWI Explored and let us know what else you all want to see in the future. Be good to one another and, of course…

Happy Exploring!

A Look Backwards at NWI History
Oct 19, 1897
George Pullman dies — the name behind Hammond and Michigan City railcar plants
Portrait of George M. Pullman, from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, July 1894 (Library of Congress)

On Oct. 19, 1897, railroad sleeping-car inventor George Mortimer Pullman died in Chicago at 66, three years after the bitter 1894 Pullman Strike. His name later became part of Northwest Indiana industry: the Indiana Historical Society notes Pullman-Standard — formed from Pullman's car company and Standard Steel Car — ran major railcar plants in both Hammond (built 1906) and Michigan City, where Pullman had acquired the Haskell & Barker car works in 1922 and built freight cars for decades.
