🏘️The Lowdown🏘️
A lowdown on what’s happening in NWI and the State of Indiana writ large.
In a partnership between Midwest Urban Strategies, the Center for Workforce Innovations and others, NWI will be home to the 2026 Annual Convening of Workforce Works - The Urban Rural Connection. From June 2nd to the 4th, employers, educators, representatives and community organizers will be participating in guided tours, presentations and on-site programming across three NWI cities - Michigan City, Gary and Rensselaer. This event is meant to give workforce leaders an opportunity to experience what happens when the systems of employment interact positively with the needs of the communities they service.
Local supermarket chain Strack & Van Til, which is the largest grocery store chain in the Region, will be extending their hours at several locations. For the first time since 2018, many of the stores will stay open until midnight. Stores in Winfield, Demotte, Lowell, Cedar Lake and Crown Point (Franciscan Dr.) will be open from 6 am to 11pm. Stores in Schererville, Portage, Munster, St. John, Crown Point (Broadway) and Highland will be open from 6 am to midnight.
A long-in-progress lawsuit between East Chicago firefighters and the city will continue on for some time, after the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled on Tuesday that there was improper procedure on behalf of Lake Superior Judge Kristina Kantar in her final judgement on the case last year. The award of cash payments and additional time off for firefighters were among the core issues within her ruling, with the appellate panel claiming that Kantar committed reversible error by not notifying affected firefighters of the class-action lawsuit and giving them an opportunity to opt-out. After this ruling, the case must be restarted by Kantar, following the procedure for class actions in accordance with the Court of Appeals ruling. This restart of the case is win for the East Chicago Professional Firefighters Local 365, who previously argued that their damages owed should have been determined by a jury. The litigation between the City of East Chicago and ECPF Local 365 stemmed from disputes over a new work schedule, proposed by the city, that would have disrupted firefighter sleep schedules and personal lives.
Road work will be taking place on U.S. 6 between Mander Road and C.R. 350 East, starting on this upcoming Monday, to install a bridge deck overlay at Coffee Creek. Construction will take place through the end of July, so residents and commuters who use U.S. 6 in Porter County for travel will have to utilize alternative routes.
The City of Hammond has called for an end to the nearly three month long lockout of over 800 union workers at the BP Whiting Refinery, who have been out of work since mid-March after contract disputes with the energy corporation. The Hammond City Council voted unanimously in approval on Tuesday for a resolution that voices support for members of the USW Local 7-1 and calls out BP for continuing the lockout of workers. East Chicago City Council is, at the time of writing, voting on a similar resolution tonight as well.
Werner Graf, grandson of the original owner of the long-running Graf Dairy in Michigan City, has acquired the former dairy building at 1615 Franklin St. - hoping to transform the historical building into a new Graf Dairy Business Complex. He hopes to turn the space into a restaurant, bar , events venue, ice cream parlor and extra space for other businesses to lease. The building was originally built in 1931, with production of milk out of the building halting in the 60s. It was then a flooring store for some time before laying dormant. Graf says that there is a lot of restoration work to be done, but that it is a dream of his to return it to glory for the town of Michigan City and its history.
➡️What’s In, What’s Out? ➡️
A quick summary of the businesses around NWI that have come and those that have gone
BJ’s Wholesale Club will be opening up a membership-based warehouse retail location in Portage later this year. Similar to Costco or Sam’s Club, BJ’s stocks more than 7,000 items at wholesale prices - from produce to outdoor furniture to a full-service deli counter. Exact timing on a grand opening is currently unknown.
Charley’s Cheesesteaks has opened a new location in Gary, at 1921 W. 25th Ave in the former Brown Skin Coffee Roasters cafe location. Charley’s has locations in Portage and Lansing, Il, and offers up Philly cheesesteaks, wings, fries and lemonades.
The Layover, a new dining concept from chef and proprietor of the recently opened Lincoln + Wicker in Schererville Jay Ruff, will be opening this year in St. John. The chef-guided bar/restaurant offers small plates, craft cocktails, and an alluring, late-night atmosphere with a concept rooted in the idea of a layover between flight destinations. Along with the airport and transit theme, the space is adorned with an underground, punk-esque atmosphere- inspired by the music of Talking Heads, Iggy Pop and other NY rock legends. The Layover will offer dishes like Neapolitan pizzas, kebabs, a raw bar that includes oysters, and a variety of internationally inspired offerings as well.
Cousins Maine Lobster Food Truck will be at two different NWI locations in the coming week or so. Today, they will be at the Dyer Town Center from 11 am to 7pm. Next Tuesday, they will be located at Tractor Supply Co. in Merrillville from 11am to 7pm.
Villa Nova Pizzeria in Chesterton has rebranded to South Shore Pizzeria Restaurante. The menu will remain the same sans the Villa Nova branding.
Wings Galore has opened up in Merrilville at 5460 Broadway, serving up traditional-style Buffalo wings, chicken tenders, fried fish and shrimp, burgers and Philly cheesesteaks. They also offer different themed fried-rice dishes, a unique offering from a wing joint.
The BBQ Ribcage has opened up in Chesterton at 1331 Broadway. This new barbeque spot is carry-out only at the moment, serving up ribs with a Memphis style dry rub, rib tips, turkey tips, hot links, and all the sides you’ve come to expect from a BBQ spot.
Creekside Bar and Grill has closed its doors in Michigan City.
The Hammond branch of American Community Bank is temporarily closed due to damage sustained from an auto accident.
