A Sneak Peek of What February Has in Store

Today in NWI

First things first, we have to talk about the thing we’ve all been talking about this week…or, atleast, since Monday evening.

My alma mater (and the alma mater of many from the Region, I’m sure) Indiana University has made history in an almost incomprehensible way. IU won the College Football National Championship for the very first time in the schools history, with an undefeated season to boot. It’s hard to not feel incredibly proud about my school and I wish they could’ve taken care of business just a few years earlier so I could’ve capped off my senior year in Bloomington with the once-in-a-lifetime party that is currently happening down there. Really cool stuff!

Now onto the topic of really NOT-cool stuff, we’ve got some weather to talk about. Huge potential this weekend for brutally cold temperatures, with a lesser chance of a massive snow storm coming through the area. The projections differ depending on which weather service you use, but going off of CBS Chicago’s maps, we might be spared the brunt of the winter weather. Find the forecast map and the weekend forecast as we currently see it below.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.

NIPSCO and United Steelworkers Local 12775 have begun contract negotiations, coming as NIPSCO is planning modernization efforts and a renewed effort paid to service reliability.

  • NIPSCO officials released a statement saying that they hope to meet with USW in good faith, delivering a quick negotiation and long-term satisfaction for customers. NiSource services more than 1.4 million people across Indiana and have come under hot water as of late for sudden and staggering rate increases in the last year. USW Local 12775 has stated that they are prepared to fight for a contract that protects its workers and creates a fair, safe work environment.

Speaking of NIPSCO, in light of staggering price increases to utility services, Region locals have planned a protest against these unfair price hikes.

  • Northwest Indiana residents have seen bills from NIPSCO climb in cost, with some peoples costs doubling and even tripling in the last six months. NIPSCO has said that these rising costs are simply due to seasonal conditions that change energy usage and the increase of maintenance costs for the delivery of natural gas to customers. In response to unsatisfactory service and huge cost increases, hundreds of Region customers are planning a protest outside of NIPSCO’s Hammond regional office for Sunday, February 1st.

In a report released Wednesday at the Community Health Net Health Centers in Gary by the Gary Advocates for Responsible Development, environmental specialists are urging Region steel mills to invest in green technology in order to stay competitive and at the cutting edge.

  • The reduction of air pollution and carbon emissions that would come from the refineries shifting from coal-burning blast furnaces to more green, direct reduced iron furnaces is at the core of the reports findings. This report was released in the interest of keeping the residents of Gary and Lake County as a whole safer, with cleaner air and a safer environment.

Two Northwest Indiana communities are planning on obtaining additional alcohol sale permits for new restaurants, thanks to a Senate Public Policy Committee legislation decision.

  • Three additional liquor permits would be given to the city of Schererville under this legislation, while a separate piece of legislation would allow a future-determined number of alcohol permits to be issued to restaurants that will be located in areas surrounding the South Shore Line train stations. Towns this would apply to are Michigan City, Chesterton, and Portage.

Indiana Dunes State Park has jacked up out-of-state entrance fees, rising from $12 a carload to $20.

I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was. Likewise, I never imagined that home might be something I would miss.
