The Call to Explore:
Welcome, Explorers, to your Monday edition of NWI Explored. It’s officially May and that means we’re one step closer to NWI summer. I’ll appreciate the mid 50s weather over the 90+ degree heat and humidity of July, but to each their own. For May, we’re going to continue testing out some new features to the newsletter. We recently started our weekly polls and there are a lot of other ideas we have to help engage this community and build new ways to explore. The polls that we’ve started doing each week seem to have been a huge hit with y’all! We’ve had so many responses for places that we’d never heard of or have meant to try but can’t quite get to, so we really appreciate all of the input the Explorers have given us. We’re going to provide recaps of the results on occasion, but we want to gather a few results at a time before including it here. Thanks again for all the continued input. Thanks for reading everyone and we hope that May is just as great as April! Now, onto the newsletter!
We Want to Hear From You!
Every week, we will be cycling in a new poll for the Explorers to answer about NWI. Favorite spots, underrated meals, hidden gems and a whole bunch else will be covered. These polls will help us to build the definitive NWI Explored guide to the Northwest Indiana, completely based on input from all of you! So, make your voices heard and answer our weekly poll!
Polls will switch out on each week’s Thursday edition, so you’ve got a full week to respond!

🏘The Lowdown 🏘
Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and headlines around the Region and Indiana writ large.
NIPSCO has reached an agreement with its union-represented cleric workers, ending the month-long lockout and returning all affected to work effectively Tuesday.
300 clerical workers, represented by USW Local 13796, were the last holdouts on the contract negotiations between the natural gas and electrical utility and union workers. The contract is said to offer higher wages, enhanced benefits, career development opportunities and improved safety standards.
The Hoosier Lottery announced last week that a jackpot-winning Powerball ticket was sold to a Region resident at the Al’s Supermarket in LaPorte - entitled the local to a prize worth $71.1 million. Two others in the Region won $1 million and $2 million last week as well.
The full, 87-page federal indictment against a locally-operated illegal gambling ring, whose operators owned Gino’s Steakhouse and Paragon Restaurant and were raided last week, has been released.
You can read the full indictment at the link right here, but we will go over some of the key revelations since the raids happened last week.
Federal fillings indicate that Paragon Restaurant in Hobart served as a drop site for illegal gambling, led by James Gerodemos (owner of both Paragon and Gino’s) with implications that tie former Lake County Sheriff John Buncich to the activites. Buncich was indicted on federal bribery convictions in 2017 and it’s thought that he and Gerodemos have been connected since the early 2000s. Buncich owned a smoke shop that neighbored Paragon Restaurant in Hobart around the time that the family and he are thought to have met - around 2004.
Federal agents have said that their investigation into this gambling ring and the Gerodemos family have been ongoing for over 20 years. These raids have brought with them 22 individuals charged for federal crimes in connection with this illegal gambling ring
This ring, spearheaded by James Gerodemos, have had incidents reported against them that have only recently come to light in the wake of the raids on their tethered restaurants
A Florida man reached out to authorities saying that the NWI gambling ring threatened his life over a supposed gambling debt of $30,000. The criminals tried to track the man down after he fled, but with continued threats on his life he remained hidden until reaching out to authorities to report the group.
James Gerodemos is directly cited as having threatened the daughter of a Texas man who had outstanding debts to this illegal gambling ring, claiming that Gerodemos would sexually assault this man’s daughter (who was attending Valparaiso University at the time) if he didn’t pay up. This is backed up by a video that authorities acquired from Gerodemos of one of his cooks at Gino’s Steakhouse (and current co-defendant) Ehab Mustafa - known as “Eddie” -delivering a pizza and a bouquet of roses to the Texas man’s house with a note that detailed how if the man didn’t pay up, they would be heading to Valparaiso University - implying a similar thing to Gerodemos’ earlier threats.
All in all, Gerodemos and his 21 associates have been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy, extortion, collection of debts by extortionate means, money laundering, use of interstate communications to transmit wagering information, and operation of an illegal gambling business. This was a multistate, multi-million dollar operation spanning decades, reliant on threats, money laundering and a sprawling network of local businesses and powerful operatives. Stay tuned to see how wide the web can truly get.
The Lake County Historical Society and Museum was forced to leave the Old Lake County Courthouse last year, but has found a new home at the current site of the Lake County Solid Waste Management District building. The new location will sit at 8695 Broadway in Merrillville, leasing the front of the building to continue operations.
The builders behind the AmeriPlex at the Crossroads and AmeriPlex at the Port developments, Holladay Properties, have made plans for a new industrial park that will sit on U.S. 20 in Michigan City - near by Swan Lake Memorial Park. Holladay has also broken ground on a $5 million industrial building at 6101 Cleveland Ave in Michigan City.
Bolstered by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Forest Service, the City of Michigan City has announced a tree watering program citywide - supporting the long-term health of the 500 trees it planted last fall. Tycol Excavating will be carrying out the efforts, so residents may notice tanker trucks moving through neighborhoods as a part of the weekly schedule of tree watering.
Former Democrat State Representative Chet Dobis passed away this Saturday. He was 83 years old. Dobis helped to establish the town of Merrillville and fueled growth in Lake County for the majority of his career in Washington. His contributions are still felt to this day across the Region. Our thoughts are with the Dobis family.
Below, you can find a run down of the local town halls, public forums and city meetings that will be taking place this week across the Region.

The upscale feeling spot has live music on the weekends and has already pulled in celebrity guests in Marlon Wayans and R&B group Mindless Behavior, while also boasting a menu of Caribbean classics and contemporary American classics.
Opportunity Enterprises has opened a new cafe inside of the Valpo YMCA. OE is a nonprofit that helps to empower people with disabilities and their new venture is this cafe that will be serving smoothies, tea, iced coffee, snacks and OE’s own Do Goodies products. I love the work that Opportunity Enterprises does and believe them to be a beacon in my hometown, so I love to share all the great work they’re doing.
