The Call to Explore:

We are back once again with a new issue of NWI Explored. We’re approaching the halfway point of the first month of this brand new year and there’s already been a lot going on. This is just a casual reminder that even in times of uncertainty and strangeness, the people around you can and should be the greatest force for good in your life. When everything surrounding you feels crushing, find comfort and solace in the people you call family and friends. I end every single newsletter with the same common refrain: be good to one another, and I don’t do that lightly or just for fun. Goodness is the most important force in the universe, so be good to one another and good things will happen.

Anyway, let’s get on with the rest of the newsletter. Thanks for being here day in, day out.

Every January Event You’ll Want to Know About

The Lowdown on News all across NWI

Today in NWI

Today in NWI

For those of us who are inclined to care about sports, the favorite teams of NWI have made a big impact over the weekend. As an IU alum myself, I certainly had a lot to celebrate on that front. As a staunch 49ers fan, however, I’ll give you Bears fans a polite congratulations and move on from there.

In what has been an incredibly unprecedented run, IU just beat the ever-living hell out of Oregon in a 56-22 victory in the College Football Playoff semi-final. They will be facing Miami in the final a week from today, January 19th, and it will be a game you won’t want to miss. If we’re going off of how IU has been playing more often than not, it should be an absolute blowout.

And, in professional football, the Chicago Bears have won their first playoff game in 15 years. Not only that, but it was against their long-standing rivals, the Green Bay Packers in a record-setting comeback victory. The Bears were down 21-6 entering the fourth and would come back to win 31-27 in the final moments of the game. Again, all the respect to the Chicago Bears and their fans, but I’m just glad my Niners unseated the Philadelphia Eagles and continue on a playoff run that I had no hope of being a reality considering their profound injuries and lack of personnel.

Your NWI Forecast

Our mild January weather will be continuing, at least up to Thursday. The lack of snow thus far into 2026 is something to celebrate, although I could do without the mugginess and errant winds. There’s nothing worse than trying to watch the IU game and worrying about the windstorm taking out your power. Anywho, here’s your NWI forecast for the upcoming midweek.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘

Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.

Local Veterans took to the streets on Saturday in the wake of the murder of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis, highlighting the civil unrest surrounding what many are considering an overreach of power by the Trump Administration.

  • At the Highway of Flags memorial in Highland on Saturday, veterans and concerned citizens alike took to the street to protest the latest actions of ICE and the Trump administration. These protests, which were spread across the entirety of Northwest Indiana, come after high-profile shootings and killings by ICE agents in Portland and Minneapolis. Protestors across the Region quoted writers and political minds on their signs, dressed up as symbols of non-violence and resistance, and made their voices heard. Chief among their concerns was the lack of pushback or response from local politicians, saying that where our political representatives are failing us, they will make up the difference. Some in attendance at the Highland protest in specific said that they are working to create a community-driven outreach program to counter the presence of ICE in NWI.

Common ground cannot be met between GOP and Democratic leaders in our State legislature, as the work begins on passing legislation ahead of the Indiana Primary

  • Republican leaders of the Indiana House and Senate have made eliminating government regulation and programs their main focus, claiming they are the thing holding back economic development in the state. Democratic leaders have countered the GOP, contending that direct action is needed to help Hoosiers with rising costs across the board. Since the GOP has a supermajority in each chamber of the General Assembly, their way will most likely be the way legislature goes. Those provisions will take the shape of preempting zoning laws to excite development and housing, limiting utility costs, eliminating state boards and commissions to deregulate these processes, and scrapping education-related regulations.

Here is what your local municipalities will be voting on this week during their council meetings.

  • Valpo City Council will be meeting today, January 12th at 6pm in City Hall. City Council will be electing a council president and vice president to lead the group through 2026, and are also considering provisions about new sewer use rules for the city.

  • Hammond Common Council will also be meeting today, January 12th at 6pm in City Hall. They will be considering an amendment to the planned development ordinance that sets land use rules for the Hammond YMCA and Sportsplex. They will also consider the reappointment of Melissa Farrell ( a long-standing member) to the city’s Gaming Advisory Committee.

  • Merrillville Town Council will be meeting on Tuesday, January 13th at 6:30pm in the Municipal Complex. The council will vote of a lot of city appointments, with no ordinances or resolutions to consider in addition.

  • East Chicago Common Council will be meeting on Wednesday, January 14th at 6pm in City Hall. The council will be voting on appointments and new year considerations. There is no updated agenda on the city’s website.

I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was. Likewise, I never imagined that home might be something I would miss.
