Today in NWI
Today, I was thinking a lot about the bedrock of our hometowns: of what this whole area had been built on once upon a time. The development of NWI has been incredibly varied, with the areas of yesteryear currently going under their own form of refresh and the areas that were nascent in the heyday of NWI currently being built up to insane degrees. When you look at what somewhere like Crown Point looked like —even six years ago— compared to the glut of development happening there now, it really makes you take a step back and reflect. We are a growing Region, with incredibly varied developments and phases of revitilization.

The current development of that same intersection, as it exists now
When we look at the roots of the Region, we see the company towns built up by the steel mills: Gary, Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago. All four of these towns, while particularly grounding parts of our makeup and history, are in need of modernization and revitalization to some degree. Regardless, it’s important to recognize where we’ve all come from and the environment’s that birthed us. For a lot of us, who were born here and have lived here for their entire lives. the below image is the machine that we owe a lot to. It’s a very interesting thing to ponder, so I wanted to share some of these thoughts.

Anyway, here is your forecast for the weekend here in Northwest Indiana. Enjoy some milder weather on this last weekend before Christmas.

🏘The Lowdown 🏘
Every issue of NWI Explored comes with The Lowdown: a roundup of the most important news and happenings around the Region.
In a statement released by Team President Kevin Warren, The Chicago Bears have announced that they are mulling a move to Northwest Indiana since efforts to secure public funding in Illinois for a new stadium have stalled.
The team has already stated that they still would prefer to build a new stadium on the tract of land it owns in suburban Arlington Heights, and is not using the move across state lines as leverage, but the option has certainly crossed their mind and they are looking into it. Warren didn’t say where they were looking at specifically in NWI, but older efforts to build a new stadium had the team looking in Gary and Hammond as potential spots for their new home. Bears fans in the Region are probably salivating at the idea of being able to shoot down 41 to go to a Bears game. I for one, am a 49ers fan, so unless they’re playing each other at the Bears, this doesn’t affect me much :).
Related to this, local sports commentator Greg Braggs Jr. took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the matter:
❝There is absolutely no room in St John, Indiana.
Crown Point, my hometown, that would be absolutely hilarious. There is space on I65 but that’s pretty darn far from the border of Illinois.
Hammond would be the play

Liberty Township is constructing a new fire station, costing around $4.5 million, which will take through the winter to finish construction
The development is currently happening in order to replace the outdated and cramped fire station currently serving the citizens of Liberty Twp.. This new facility will be directly behind the 70-year old current building and will include a decontamination station, living quarters, workout room, and a training classroom. Liberty Twp.’s new fire station will be around three times the size of the original building, and still located at W 900 North.
Republican Jennifer-Ruth Green, currently running to represent NWI in Congress, has violated multiple state ethics rules while holding her current position in Governor Mike Braun’s cabinet.
Green admitted in a settlement with the State Ethics Commission that she violated political activity rulings by directing state employees working under her to create content and proofread posts for her own election campaign Facebook page, as well as using her taxpayer-funded vehicle in private capacities and using a State employee to complete personal tasks. The settlement reached between the Ethics Commission and Green have stated that she will pay a $10,000 fine to resolve the ethics infractions partially without a public hearing. The Ethics Commission will also be waiving any further sanctions against Green for eight additional infractions from when she held tenure as Indiana’s public safety secretary.
Region prosecutors have dropped charges against a former Gary police officer, originally charged for faking the severity of injuries sustained after slipping on ice outside of a station in an attempt to collect workers compensation.
Portage Township School Board of Trustees has approved a spending provision to construct a new middle school.
The spending provision totals $57.4 million to construct Aylesworth Middle School, at the site of Aylesworth Elementary School which is currently slated for permanent closure at the end of the school year. Further rounds of bidding will be taking place in the upcoming years to demolish Willowcreek Middle School to make even more space for the new middle school. See the proposed construction plans below.

A bill has been introduced to the State Senate that aims to reduce drowning deaths in Northwest Indiana and across the State.
State Sen. Mark Spencer, D-Gary, had introduced Senate Bill 123, which would require Indiana public and charter schools to annually show all students (K-12) age-appropriate instructional videos on water safety topics. The hope is that this initiative will provide households with the ample information and awareness surrounding the dangers of large bodies of water, helping to reduce the number of drowning deaths and water-related accidents.
Amid contract talks stalling between the Porter County Commissioners and West Porter Fire Protection District, two weeks remain to reach a fire service agreement for 2026.
The level of emergency medical services residents of the West Porter region can expect in the new year hangs in the balance, as the district’s fundamental inability to continue paying this year’s service rate spells ill for the relationship between the district and the WPFPD. This stalemate has called for Porter County Commissioner Jim Biggs to call a joint meeting of both parties in order to discuss how to move forward.
A new store has opened in the Southlake Mall in Hobart.
European jewelry magnate Swarovski has opened a storefront in the upper level of the Southlake mall, just in time for the holiday season.
The years-long push to recognize the Calumet Region of Indiana and Illinois as a National Heritage Area seems to finally have movement, as both Indiana Republicans and Illinois Democrats have introduced a bill to request this special designation.
Senators Todd Young and Jim Banks, of Indiana, and Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, of Illinois, have put forward legislation that would recognize the Indiana counties of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte and Illinois counties of Will and Cook as the Calumet National Heritage Area. This provision would reflect the significance of the NWI Region’s cultural and historical assets, as well as make for a unique tourism opportunity.

I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was. Likewise, I never imagined that home might be something I would miss.
